Steak night on Mooney Boulevard
Mooney Boulevard is Visalia's retail backbone, and Saturday is the big steak night here: doors open at 11 AM, and by six the dining room is full of families from across Tulare County. The Bone-In Ribeye is the statement cut, twenty ounces on the bone, priced at the top of the $13 to $40 planning range and worth it when two people split the sides generously. On a regular weeknight, the Ft. Worth Ribeye in a smaller cut does the same job for less. Ask for the loaded baked potato and the sauteed mushrooms and you have the full steakhouse picture. The California menu guide adds the state context.Country plates for the chicken crowd
Country Fried Chicken is the comfort order: a hand-breaded breast under cream gravy with mashed potatoes doing quiet, excellent work beside it. It sits in the chicken range of about $14 to $22 and shows up on Visalia tables as often as any steak.
A little heat to start, and the kids are covered
Rattlesnake Bites kick off a Visalia meal properly: fried rounds of jalapeno and cheese with a cool dip to keep things civilized. They are the starter adults order for the table and then defend from the kids.
